Former D&J Restaurant Waitress Dies At Age 73

Ms. JoEllen Corker Smith, age 73, of Covington, Virginia died Monday, May 4, 2020 at LewisGale Medical Center, Salem.

Ms. Smith was born on August 9, 1946 in West Virginia, the daughter of John Willard Owens and the late Grace Berry Owens.

She was employed as a waitress by the former D&J Restaurant for a number of years before her retirement.

JoEllen enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her family and friends.

Ms. Smith is survived by a son, John Brian Smith and wife, Adrienn; two daughters, Tamie Smith and Heidi Elmore; three grandchildren, Jacob Elmore, Nathaniel Lodge and Jessica Smith; four great grandchildren, Lexi Stewart, Kelsey Stewart, Abby Elmore and Jake Elmore; three brothers, John Gray Owens and wife, Linda of Roanoke, Larry Owens and wife, Barbara of Glasgow and Don Michael Owens and wife, Joyce of Covington; six sisters, Mary "Libby" Corker of Florida, Sandra Craft and husband, Melvin of West Virginia, Anise Richmond of Covington; Rita Hobbs of Lynchburg; Ann Owens and wife, Kaye of Baltimore and Tina Owens and wife, Melody of Harrisonburg; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Pat "Punk" Tabor.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
