Millboro Resident Was Navy Veteran, Self-Employed Contractor

William Larry Bates, age 80, of 587 Bolsheers Run, Millboro, Virginia died Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at his residence.

Larry was born November 3, 1939 in Richmond, California to the late William Felton and Iva Levana Mosier Bates.

He served in the United States Navy as an aviation electrician and was a self-employed contractor.

He was a member of Woodland Union Church, the Bath County chapter of the National Rifle Association, the La Marche Retreat Land Owners Association and Pop Cauley Hunt Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Tucker Bates, and a half-brother, Kenny Bates.

He is survived by a son, Robert Everette Bates of Midwest City, OK; a half-sister, Debbie Bates of California; a half-brother, Bruce Bates of Oregon; a grandson, Jacob Bates of Midwest City, OK; and a special friend, Ruby Bratton of Millboro and her son, Mike Bratton and wife, DeDe of Ft. Bragg, NC.

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the residence with Reverend David George officiating.
