Tinkerville Native Dies At Age 83

Mary Alice Gruver, 83, departed this life after a 30-year battle with lupus on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at UPMC Pinnacle-Carlisle Hospital in Pennsylvania.

She was born on August 8, 1937 in the village of Tinkerville, Glasgow, Virginia, a daughter of the late John F. and Susie (Earhart) McFaddin and was a graduate of Natural Bridge High School.

Mary Alice married John R. Gruver on May 1, 1960. He preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 2006.

Mary Alice held several jobs over her life. She worked for the commissioner of revenue of Rockbridge County in Lexington; as a babysitter and housekeeper; at the Musselman Apple Plant in Gardners; and retired from the Fehl Awning Company in Walnut Bottom, in 1999.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Walnut Bottom, and also served as a Sunday school secretary and was a lifetime member of the South Newton Township Volunteer Fire Company and Auxiliary. In her free time, Mary Alice loved canning; baking pies, cookies, and bread; watching NASCAR; and reading.

She is survived by two daughters, Danielle Renee Gruver and Gigi Gale Hasten and husband, Lawrence, both of Walnut Bottom; two grandsons, Christopher J. Hasten and fiancé, Rosemarie Morris of Newville and Anthony G. Hasten and companion, Michaela Berman of Chicago, Ill.; great granddaughter, Cecilia Ray; one sister, Norma J. Longo and husband, Ray of Durham, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Shirley McFaddin of Natural Bridge, Anita McFaddin of Tallassee, Ala., and Alma Golden of Shippensburg; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Alice was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph O. and John A. McFaddin; and one sister, Elizabeth B. Drumheller.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 17 at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. Pastor Robert Stump will officiate. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Viewing will be from 10 until 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
