White Sulphur Springs Resident Was Former C&O Hospital School Of Nursing Grad, Worked With The Greenbrier

Mary A. Casto Lawhorn, 95, a longtime resident of White Sulphur Springs, WV, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at Friendship Health & Rehab Center in Roanoke, VA.

Born June 21, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Henry Hugh Casto and Mahala Gillespie Casto.

After graduating from White Sulphur Springs High School, Mary attended the C&O Hospital School of Nursing where she was President of her class.

While training at Ashford General Hospital in Washington, DC she became homesick for the hills of West Virginia and returned to her beloved White Sulphur Springs.

She was a loyal employee of many years and provided for her family through employment at The Greenbrier Hotel.

Mary enjoyed creative descriptive writing and was proud to have several pieces of her work published in the local newspaper. She enjoyed cooking for friends and dining with them in her home.

Mary was a member of Oakhurst Episcopal Church on Big Draft Road and later attended St Thomas Episcopal Church in White Sulphur Springs, WV.

Preceding her in death, other than her parents, were son, John Howell Lawhorn; sister, Emma Gray Casto; sister, Malinda Casto Burnette, and brother, Henry "Sonny" Casto.

She is survived by daughter, Mary Rebecca "Becky" Woodson of Roanoke, VA and son, Roger Howard Lawhorn (Lisa) of White Sulphur Springs, WV; grandchildren, Dr. Erika Woodson, Adam Woodson, Dr. Sara Woodson, Roger "Pepper" Lawhorn, Jenny Lawhorn, and Levi Lawhorn; eight great-grandchildren and many much loved nieces and nephews.

No service is planned. In remembrance of Mary, show a kindness to someone. Plant a tree. Help a homeless animal through supporting your local animal shelter. Cook a good meal. Enjoy a walk. Call or visit a friend or neighbor.
