Obituary for Martha (Mattie) Elizabeth Bennington Smith Martha (Mattie) Elizabeth Bennington Smith
Lifelong Member Of Lauderdale A. R. Presbyterian Church Dies At Age 99

Martha (Mattie) Elizabeth Bennington Smith went to be with her Lord on December 16, 2020. She was 99 years old.

Born May 8, 1921 in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of William Alexander Bennington and Minnie Hartless Bennington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar Smith; a daughter, Millie Smith Coleman, and a son, Timmy Smith. She was also preceded in death by her seven siblings.

Surviving are her son, Del Smith and wife, Sherry; daughter Marty Smith Sensabaugh and husband, Wayne; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mattie was a faithful lifelong member of Lauderdale A. R. Presbyterian Church in Lexington, where she dedicated her adult life to its work. Throughout her life, she was involved in many groups within the church, as well as being a choir member for over 50 years. She could always be found in the church kitchen whenever a dinner was being prepared. She loved her church family and greatly missed them during this past year when she was unable to attend.

She was known to many children as Nanny. Mattie was a babysitter in her home for over 20 years and loved each child that she cared for. Many of those children now have children of their own and continued to visit her. She loved hearing about their accomplishments and talked about them often.

Many will remember her for taking her walk around town every day. She walked one to two miles daily until she was nearly 90. She loved to take care of her yard and her home. She truly loved to clean. She lived alone and took care of her home until she was 98 years old. She was a testament to healthy living.

Mattie was a woman of great faith. She loved God and her family above all else. Those who knew her knew that she tried to live each day being a faithful servant to the Lord and being a good mother, grandmother, good neighbor and friend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Carol's Coats, in care of Lauderdale ARP Church in Lexington.

For the safety of all those she loved, burial will be private. A memorial celebration of her life will be planned for a later date.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
