Korean War Veteran Was Retired CSX Engineer. Longdale United Methodist Church Member

John Lewis (Johnie) Dean, Jr., age 87, of 6118 Longdale Furnace Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Sunday, February 28, 2021 at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany, Low Moor.

Johnie was born December 13, 1933 in Covington, Virginia to the late John Lewis Dean, Sr. and Blanche Amelia Robinson Dean.

He was a retired engineer for CSX Transportation and was also employed by AMTRAK for 14 years.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa.

He was a member of Longdale United Methodist Church and the United Transportation Union, and loved antique cars.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a number of half-brothers and half-sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Knick Dean of Clifton Forge; two sons, Jay Dean and wife, Chris of Vero Beach, FL and Jeff Dean and wife, Kate of Haddon Heights, NJ; two sisters, Shirley Nicely of Chester and Doris Dudding of Colonial Heights; six grandchildren, Zachary Dean, Michael Dean, Nicholas Dean, Jack Dean, Andrew Dean, and Jeffrey Dean Jr.; a nephew, Michael Nicely; and a niece, Vickie Talley.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Bob Smith and Reverend Gene Ayers officiating. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge. The family will be present at Nicely Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.
