Longtime Rockbridge County School Bus Driver Dies At Age 86

Janet Reese Moneymaker, age 86, passed away peacefully at Kendal at Lexington, Virginia on July 22, 2021.

Daughter of Carl M. and Mary Snider Reese, she was born on Oct. 27, 1934 in Brownsburg.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James L. Moneymaker.

She is survived by a daughter, Kay M. Crim (Sam) of Auburn, Ala.; sons, Jerry L. Moneymaker (Brenda) and Donald M. Moneymaker (Angie) of Raphine; four grandchildren, Samuel H. Crim (Sarah) of Auburn Ala., Jackie Gillespie (Will) of Marion, Ill., James R. Moneymaker (Carol) of Cloverdale, and Chelsea R. Huffman (Sam) of Vinton; five great-grandchildren, Sidney, Sawyer and Stella Crim of Auburn, Ala., Charlotte Moneymaker of Cloverdale and Onyx Wilmott of Raphine; one nephew, Troy Plott of Palm Springs, Calif.; two brothers, Hugh E. Reese (Marie) of Richmond, R. Wayne "Weasel" Reese (Brenda) of Fairfield and many cousins and friends.

She was a very remarkable woman, being both a mother and a father to her children for many years after the death of her husband, taking on the farm duties along with driving a school bus for Rockbridge County Schools for 45 years and working at a truck stop part-time where she became known as one of the best bakers in the area.

She enjoyed farming, planting a large garden, and spending time with her family.

She was a lifelong member of New Providence Presbyterian Church in Raphine and she enjoyed serving in her church and community in her early years. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.

A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Loren Tate Mitchell at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 26 at New Providence Presbyterian Cemetery.
