Alleghany County Native Was Former R. L. Johnston & Sons Carpenter

Mr. Dewey Carlos May Sr., age 83, of Alleghany County, Virginia, died September 8, 2021 at LewisGale - Alleghany Hospital.

Mr. May was born August 23, 1938, the son of the late Jesse and Beulah May.

A lifelong resident of Alleghany County, he worked for H. O. Canfield before going to work at Hercules until the fire. He then worked for R. L Johnston and Sons as a carpenter.

He loved working with Tiny, Butch, Weazel and Josh - Oh the stories he would tell!

Mr. May was a past member of Falling Spring Fire and Rescue.

Dewey was an avid hunter, fisherman, bingo playing, slot playing and lottery scratch off gambler. He always had a hunting or fishing story to tell. Dewey loved sitting on the front porch with Frenchy watching airplanes.

Mr. May is survived by his son, Dewy C. May Jr. (Karen); daughter, Lori May Parris (Frenchy); special friend, Betty Ryder and grandson, Kolt; eight grandchildren, Beth Anne Jamerson (Jason), Brent May (Megan), Chuckie Kimberlin (Ashley), Ashley Carr (Corey), Tyler Woods (Haley), Jennifer Parris (fiancé, John Davis), Joanne Parris and Jackie Parris; fifteen great grandchildren, John Oakes Jamerson, Madi, Evan and Holden May, Peyton and Madi Carr, Tyson, Devin and Adley Kimberlin, Jayden, Jaycee and Jessa Davis, Emma and Mason Woods and Jaylynn Parris; brothers, Freddie May (Dusty) and Ralph May (Linda); sisters, Patricia Shiflett, Barbara Jean Carpenter, Betty Brown (Johnny), Rita Sue Terry (Brance); and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. May is preceded in death by his brothers, Buddy May, Basil May, Berlin May and a infant brother, Daniel May, as well as his sisters, Edith Ehlers and Christine Young.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 13, 2021 from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Lynn Wright officiating. Interment will follow at Emory United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Lynn Wright and Rev. Andrew Baek officiating.

The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Josh Johnston, Jerry Givens, Tony Cale, Rickey May, Don Owens, Harold May Thomas "Bub" May, and Jeff Carpenter. Honorary Pallbearers will be David "Butch" Persinger, John Helmintoller, Haze Williams, Mike McFarland, Brance Terry, Pat Loving, Johnny Miles, Gary Hepler and Donnie Cale.
