Obituary for Barbara Anne McGuffin Barbara Anne McGuffin
Longtime Rockbridge County Schools Teacher Co-Owned McGuffin's Texaco In Fairfield

Barbara Anne McGuffin, 91, of Buena Vista, Virginia, formerly of Fairfield, died Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital.

Born March 11, 1930 in Alexandria, she was daughter of the late Marshall Stewart Watkins and Mary Dornin Watkins.

She was a 1951 graduate of Lynchburg College.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Oliver McGuffin in 1989. Barbara and Jamie were married 38 years and owned and operated McGuffin's Texaco in Fairfield for many years.

Barbara was a longtime Rockbridge County educator, retiring in 2000 after teaching for over 37 years.

Surviving are her children, Mary Grey McGuffin Rhoades (Bob), Marshall McGuffin (Betta), and James McGuffin (Nancy); four grandchildren, Jacob Rhoades (Katherine Quigley), Ethan Rhoades, Carson McGuffin (Callie), and Kip Rathbun (Mary); two great-grandchildren; special friend, Marnita Wright; grand dogs, Harley and George; and her many wildlife friends she delighted in watching from her porch in the woods.

Barbara loved spending time with her family, her beautiful flower gardens, the occasional Vera Bradley shopping trip, all things concerning flying pigs, book fairs, and providing books for children. She cherished the many friendships she made while teaching.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, September 10 at the Fairfield Cemetery by the Rev. Bill Klein.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rockbridge County Public Schools, the Rockbridge County Public Schools Foundation, or the Rockbridge SPCA. In her own words, "I do love a few flowers, but if anyone wants to do something, buy a kid a book!"

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
