Obituary for Kevin Thomas Thornsbury Kevin Thomas Thornsbury
Mill Gap Resident Was VDOT Mechanic, Supervisor

Kevin Thomas Thornsbury, 51, of Mill Gap, Virginia, passed away Monday, November 1, 2021 at his home on Back Creek.

He was born July 10, 1970 in Richlands, a son of Glenna Carolyn (Bailey) Thornsbury of Grundy and the late Billy Edward Thornsbury.

A 1988 graduate of Grundy Senior High, Kevin continued his education at Diesel Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, and then later attended Liberty University, where he studied business administration.

An entrepreneur at heart, Kevin founded Hi-Land Video Store very early in his Highland County residency and was the long-time owner-operator of Thrive Farm Nursery.

From 2000-2018 he was with the Virginia Department of Transportation, serving many years as a mechanic and ultimately supervisor. Most recently, he was the co-owner and CFO of Good Excavating.

An excellent and loyal friend, Kevin was always available when someone was in need. He never met a stranger and was often caught up in conversation with people from all walks of life, and was known far and wide for his great sense of humor.

He was an attentive, loving and kind husband, but the role he cherished most was as being a father. He loved playing and spending time with the kids in the kitchen, cheering them on from the sidelines of a baseball game, taking them swimming, fishing and exploring. Kevin also enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, arts and storytelling. He was taken unexpectedly after a very joyous night spent with his children trick or treating, doing what he loved, spending time with his family and socializing with the community he had been a part of for many years.

In addition to his mother Kevin is survived by his wife, Susan "Ashley" Thornsbury; and their children, Orion, Aletheia and Odin Robertson and Declan Thornsbury, all of Mill Gap; sister, Shannon Hurley of Vinton; as well as his many friends.

A celebration of life for friends and family will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending memorial to the Highland County Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 268, Monterey, Va. 24465.

The Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements.
