World War II Veteran Worked With Hercules, CFW Telephone Company; Was Calvary Christian Church Disciples of Christ Charter Member

James Robert Simpson, 94, of Covington, Virginia, died Saturday, November 13, 2021 at his residence.

Mr. Simpson was born May 17, 1927 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Grover Simpson, Sr. and Irene Sartain Simpson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Grover Simpson, Jr. and his wife, Barbara; a sister and brother-in-law, Catherine Clements and husband, Roy.

James retired from the former Hercules, Inc. in Covington and worked for CFW Phone Company. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the European theater.

He was a charter member of Calvary Christian Church Disciples of Christ, were he served as Elder, Chairman of the board, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader. He was active in the Boy Scouts, serving as scout leader for many years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews, including Gregg Simpson and his wife, Elizabeth of Florida, Jonathan Simpson and his wife, Patti of Covington, Eric Simpson of Clifton Forge and Hans Simpson and Tonya Adkins of Buchanan. Also surviving are a number of great nieces and nephews and special friends, Laura and Jim Guth of Covington.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Warren officiating.

The internment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 will have graveside rites.

The family will receive their friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Simpson's name to Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422 or to Calvary Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 1329 S. Pond Ave., Covington, Va. 24426.
