Collierstown Baptist Church Member Was "Backbone" Of The Effinger Fire Department

Shirley Jane Potter Hostetter (Grandma Shirley), of Lexington, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl "Junior" Hostetter; a grandson, John Hostetter; father and mother in-law, Carl and Emma Hostetter; two brothers, Burton and Gene Potter; sister, Lois "Noonie" Ayers; and brothers-in-law, Dorman Hostetter and Pete Link.

Surviving are her sons, Randy Hostetter (Tina) of Roanoke, Michael Hostetter of Buena Vista and Carl "Bucky" Hostetter (Laurie) of Lexington; grandchildren, Amanda, Chad (Amy), Matthew, Jason (Brandy), Brent (Hannah), Destini and Ashley Hostetter; seven great-grandchildren, Danielle, Caleb, MaKinlee, Jaycee, Jorgia, Josie and Harlii; brothers, Jerry (Helen) and Freddie Potter; sisters, Linda Hostetter and Joyce (Eddie) Davis; sister-in-law, Patsy Link; brother-in-law, Tommy Hostetter; many nieces, nephews, her extended family at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department and special friends that were very dear to her, J.D. and family, Johnny and Betty, Maggie, Evelyn, Florence, Ellis and Janet and Patsy.

Shirley was a member of the Collierstown Baptist Church. She dedicated her life to the service of others and all who were fortunate enough to know her called her "Grandma Shirley." She spent countless days and nights preparing meals for volunteer emergency service personnel, preparing for fund-raising events and helping prepare and perfect the Effinger apple-butter recipe. Shirley was the backbone of not only her family but that of the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department and Auxiliary. She was honest, hard working, carefree and her life was full of compassion.

Shirley held many titles to include Mama, grandma, great grandma, sister, aunt, great aunt, friend and believer, not only in God, but the good in people. Although she was known as Grandma Shirley to most; three very fortunate men had the privilege of calling her Mama.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery by the Rev. Skip Hastings. Friends may gather with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 3, 2021 at the Effinger firehouse; masks are required.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that charitable donations be made to the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department at 2824 Collierstown Road, Lexington, VA 24450, or Rockbridge Area Hospice at 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
