Monterey United Methodist Church Was VDOT Retiree

Betty Sue (Mauzy) Caricofe, 86, of Monterey, Virginia, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021.

She was born in Hightown on September 8, 1935, a daughter of the late William Whitfield and Lillie Grace (Harper) Mauzy.

On October 7, 1972 she married Waide Franklin Caricofe, Jr., who predeceased her on April 6, 1992.

A woman of great faith, Betty was a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church.

She retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Betty was an avid reader, enjoyed walking and visiting with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Mary Mauzy Grant; as well as three brothers, George, Jack and Robert "Bob" Mauzy.

Betty is survived by two brothers, Charles Mauzy and wife, Peggy of Staunton and John H. Mauzy of Churchville; sisters-in-law, Sue Ann Mauzy of Staunton and Audrey Mauzy of York, Pennsylvania; brothers-in-law, Roy Grant of McDowell and Bobbie Caricofe and wife, Rena of Staunton; nieces, Elizabeth "Liz" Hylton, Christina "Tina" Grant, Angela "Angie" Caricofe Armstrong, Karen Neiderer and Sharon Stough; nephews, Dwayne Mauzy, Gary Mauzy, James Mauzy, Lee Grant, Bill Mauzy and Joseph Mauzy; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 7, 2021 in Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton with Pastor Bobbie Jo Gardner officiating.

The staff of Obaugh Funeral Home will receive family and friends wishing to pay their respects between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday, December 6, 2021.

Pallbearers will be Dwayne Mauzy, James Mauzy, Lee Grant, Bill Mauzy, Joseph Mauzy, Noah Grant and David Fridley.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Highland County Public Library, P. O. Box 519, Monterey, Va. 24465 or Monterey United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 382, Monterey, Va. 24465.

The Obaugh Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
