Obituary for Ernest Sperka Ernest Sperka
Former Linotype Operator Was Printer For Local Weeklies

Ernest Sperka, 87, of Natural Bridge, Virginia, died December 7, 2021 at his home.

He was born December 23, 1933 in Buena Vista, a son of the late Lawrence Edward Sperka and Ida Belle Hartless Sperka.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Ernest Sperka; brother, Lewis Hartless Sperka; and sisters, Etta Hartless Irvine and Nina Sperka Bell.

He is survived (though just barely) by his beautiful and beloved wife of 62 years, Gail Perkins Sperka; son, John and Judy Sperka; granddaughters, Emma and Claire, Stephens City; and daughter, Gretchen Sperka and Aaron Benjamin; grandchildren, Rose and Vincent Benjamin, Urbana, Ill.

Ernie graduated (though just barely) from Lexington High School and worked as a linotype operator and printer for local weeklies.

He retired in 1995 to his Natural Bridge estate, Heartache Acres, where he lived until his death. Ernie would regale visitors with tales of his boyhood in and around Lexington. Woods Creek, Goshen Pass, Cave Spring and the Maury River, provided the setting for many an adventure. Of note in his career is an 87-yard touchdown run in 1951 playoff game against Pulaski High School that got called back.

Honoring his request, there will be a private burial with no visitation or services. He suggests that you save your money and take a walk in the woods with your children. Bon voyage.
