Obituary for Betty Lou (Betsy) Carwell Betty Lou (Betsy) Carwell
Fairfield Resident Dies At Age 83

Betty Lou (Betsy) Carwell, 83, of Fairfield, Virginia, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022, after a lengthy battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Mrs. Carwell was born on May 29, 1939 in Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Gilbert Hamilton and Ruby Dale (Allen) Brandenburg.

Betsy spent her life putting others before herself. Through her illness, she always told everyone she "was fine" or "fit as a fiddle." Her greatest enjoyment was sending cards to everyone throughout the year. Her lifelong devotion of always thinking of others will stand as her legacy. Unlike her nickname "poor ole Betsy" (given to her by Herbie during his racing career), she was rich with loving family, friends and pups.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Hoover "Herb" Carwell on August 26, 2019.

She is survived by her daughters, Debby Carwell and Lu Ann Smith, both of Raphine; a sister, Martha Black of Stuarts Draft; grandchildren, Blake Smith and Hayley Smith; two special nieces, Sherry Wiltshire and Melissa Black; life-long friend Thelma Swisher; and her beloved dog "Jessie James".

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 15 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Hermon Cemetery in Newport.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 14 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home. The casket will remain closed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests all memorial contributions be made to the Rockbridge SPCA, P. O. Box 528, Lexington, VA24450.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
