Obituary for Dr. John Andrew Schriefer, Jr. Dr. John Andrew Schriefer, Jr.
Lewisburg Resident, Retired VWSOM Educator, Dies At Age 75

Dr. John Andrew Schriefer, Jr., 75, of Lewisburg, West Virginia, died peacefully at The Seasons Place in Lewisburg on Sunday, October 19, 2025 with his life partner by his side.

He was born May 13, 1950 in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of the late John Andrew Schriefer, Sr. and Celeste Bernice Sheehan Schriefer.

John retired from WVSOM where he held the position of Associate Dean for Pre-Clinical Education and Professor of Pharmacology. Upon retirement he was granted the honorary status of Professor Emetrius.

John earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri and his doctorate from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

John's professional career was dedicated to education and research, frequently publishing research in journals of pharmacology and neuroscience. A fluent Spanish speaker, he spent time in Guadalajara, Mexico and in Puerto Rico teaching Pharmacology.

He was extremely loyal to his hometown team, the St. Louis Cardinals, and followed them closely. John also enjoyed playing baseball with his colleagues from WVSOM. Toward the end of his life, John continued to educate WVSOM students by courageously sharing his journey with Parkinson's.

John was a thoughtful, generous, kind soul who dearly loved his children, friends and family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh.

John loved his long term faithful canine friends, Terra, Stinky, Indy and Bernie.

He was an amazing support to his partner, Lucy, with whom he shared the last 30 years of his life. Toward the end of his life, John continued to educate WVSOM students by courageously sharing his journey with Parkinson's.

His loss is deeply felt by his life partner, Lucy Scott; daughter, Sarah Yocke (Charles); son, Andrew Schriefer (Margaret); grandchildren, Paisley and Paityn Yocke; a sister, Kathy Guttman (Mark); brother, Bill Schriefer (Linda); niece, Kari Frazier (Matt) and many friends, colleagues and countless medical students he nurtured.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, November 3, 2025 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg with friends and family sharing wonderful memories.
