Natural Bridge Resident, Retired U. S. Air Force Colonel, Dies At Age 65

Retired Col. Dane Paul West, 65, of Natural Bridge, Virginia, died Tuesday, October 14, 2025, with his family by his side.

Born January 8, 1960, Dane was the son of Sam N. West and the late Anne Cammack West, and preceding him in death, his in-laws, Ruben and Orla Anderson.

Dane graduated from Bismarck High School, N.D., in 1978, where he met his wife, Sheryl Lynn Anderson. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1979, married Sheryl in 1980 and began their great family adventure.

After serving as enlisted until 1989, Dane was commissioned at Purdue University with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He was a steadfast Boilermaker and life-long learner, later earning two master degrees and moved into the flight line world as an aircraft maintenance officer with F-15's, F-16's and F-22's, where he would serve out his 35 year career. He served twice as a squadron commander, deputy group commander and twice as a group commander. Dane retired as colonel, leaving a legacy of excellence, integrity and "getting the job done."

He retired in 2014 to his beloved old farmhouse in Natural Bridge. He loved his High Bridge Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon, teacher and "livestream man." He was an active leader and member of the Ruritan Club and volunteered at the local food pantry.

He was a devoted father and "Grandad" and loved working outside on his Bobcat, hunting, fishing, traveling, and creating his wood shop.

Dane is survived by his wife, Sheryl (Anderson) West; daughters, Sarah West Lobos of Md., and Kristin Nicole West of Texas; grandchildren, Luke and Claire Lobos, of Maryland; siblings, Deb Colton of North Dakota, and Kathy Roll of Minnesota; six brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Bosco.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, October 24, at High Bridge Presbyterian Church in Natural Bridge by the Rev. Steve Willis. Burial at the church cemetery will be followed by a light reception.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Natural Bridge Ruritan Club.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory.
