Obituary for Floyd Payne Flanagan Floyd Payne Flanagan
Covington Resident, MeadWestvaco Retiree, Dies At Age 83

Mr. Floyd Payne Flanagan, age 83, of Covington, Virginia, passed peacefully Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at LewisGale Medical Center, Salem, surrounded loving family and close friends.

He was the husband of the late Joyce Scarless Flanagan.

Mr. Flanagan was born July 12, 1942 in Rainelle, WV, the son of the late Brooks Leo Flanagan and Odell Barnes Flanagan.

During his working career, he had been employed by the former Hercules before working at the Extruder Plant for MeadWestvaco for a number of years before his retirement.

Mr. Flanagan was of the Baptist faith.

In his spare time, Mr. Flanagan enjoyed playing golf and visiting with his friends at the golf club. An avid golfer, he was able to hit several holes-in-one over the years. Floyd was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams, West Virginia Mountaineers and Washington Redskins (Commanders).

Mr. Flanagan is survived by a son, Timothy Robert Flanagan and wife, Patty of Covington; two sisters, Linda Scruggs and Diane Hughart, both of West Virginia; a number of nieces and nephews; close friend, Jenn Mann; and his Cliffview Golf Club family, including his furry golf partner, Callie.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Flanagan was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Flanagan and one sister, Patricia Connard.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Jenn Mann, Lisa Sponagle and their husbands and James Beirman for their love, comforting presence, support and prayers.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, December 28, 2025, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. David Brown officiating, assisted by close friend, James Beirman.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the VHYGA - Virginia Highlands Youth Golf Academy, P. O. Box 344, Hot Springs, VA 24445.
