Nellie Mae Painter Smiley, 94, of Lexington, died Wednesday, January 10, 2007.

She was born May 3, 1912 in Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Calvin Arthur and Bessie Wilcher Painter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar L. Smiley and five children: Elizabeth Conner, Mary Conner, Charles Smiley, Arthur (Mick) Smiley and Richard (Bucky) Smiley; and a great grandson.

She is survived by a son, harold (Jug) Smiley and his wife, Ann, of Greenville; and a daughter, Doris S. Pennington and her husband, Leonard, of Lexington; 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2007 with Rev. Gib Hale officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 129 Randolph St., Lexington, VA. 24450 or the Fairfield Presbyterian Church, 5508 N. Lee Highway, Fairfield, VA. 24435. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2007 at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
