Obituary for Clarence Thomas Cash, Sr. Clarence Thomas Cash, Sr.
Served As Vesuvius Postmaster For 48 Years

Clarence Thomas Cash, Sr., passed away at his home in Vesuvius on Thursday, January 18, 2007.

Mr. Cash was born in Vesuvius, a son of the late Marcus L. and Lillian Shoemaker Cash on April 7, 1922.

In addition to this parents, he was also preceded in death by five brothers, Francis Lewis, Carlyle L., Everett W., Harold W., and Russell O. Cash.

As a youngster, Mr. Cash worked in the Mangus General Store which he later purchased and operated as C. T. Cash General Store for 47 years as well as other ventures in the oil and trucking businesses. In addition, he served as Postmaster at Vesuvius for 48 years, retiring in 1992. He was an avid traveler throughout the world, but his greatest love was for his family and community and he was well known for his generosity and ability to treat all men equally. He was a veteran of World War II having served as a gunner in the 480th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in Europe from 1942 until 1946. He was a founding member of the Vesuvius Community Association and the Vesuvius Ruritan Club, as well as an active member of the Steeles Tavern Post 8279 of the V.F.W., and a member and trustee of the Vesuvius Baptist Church.

On October 29, 1949, he married the former Irene E. Seaman, who survives. In addition, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Clarence Thomas (CT) Cash Jr. and Kitty Fitzgerald Cash; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by one brother, Ralph W. Cash of Montebello; one sister, Flora Belle Humphries of Waynesboro; one sister-in-law, Mary F. Cash of Vesuvius, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Harrison Funeral Home in Lexington on Saturday, January 20 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and at other times at the residence. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Vesuvius Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dan Stanley and Rev. Gib Hale, as well as by Lee and Robert Berkstresser. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations take the form of donations to the Vesuvius Community Association, P.O. Box 304, Vesuvius, VA 24483, the Raphine Fire Department or the Fairfield Rescue Squad.
