Buchanan Resident, Retired Norfolk-Southern Railroad Boilermaker, Dies At Age 61

Stephen Lee (Steve) Thrasher, 61, of Buchanan, Virginia, passed away on June 26, 2026.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Randall Conway Thrasher, Sr. and Mary Rosa Lee Kelley Thrasher; sister-in-law, Donna Lee Thrasher.

He graduated from James River High School and had retired from Norfolk-Southern Railroad as a Boilermaker.

Steve enjoyed life, his family and friends, the Moose Lodges of Lexington, Bedford, and Buchanan, and The Fishing Rodeo at Thrasher's Pond was a big part of his heartfelt desire to help those in need.

Survivors include his son, Tanner Thrasher; fiancée, Becky Walker; siblings, Debbie and Gary Johnson, R. Conway, Jr, and Jody Thrasher, Kelley and Adrienne Thrasher, and Stacey and David Clark; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and "Pappy" to Irie and Sawyer. Steve's special friends included Ronnie Harris, Melissa Hutchens, Stephon Burrell, Mark Boggs, Mike Grim, Ricky Stump, Jay Thrasher, Alvin Sensabaugh, Willis Watts, Preston and Bradley Wickline, and many others.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 30, 2026 in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan, 24066.

Funeral services for Steve will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2026 in the chapel with Ray Sloan officiating along with Mark Boggs and Mike Grim assisting. Steve will be laid to rest in Watson Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made in Steve's name to The Thrasher Pond Fishing Rodeo in care of The Mill Creek Back Pack Program, 11475 Lee Highway, Fincastle , VA 24090, or the American Cancer Society, and the Moose Lodges of Lexington, Bedford, and Buchanan.
