Leon Walter Fields Sr. was born July 5, 1949, in Glasgow, Virginia, to Lawrence and Annie Belle Fields.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war. Wounded in combat, he was awarded the Purple Heart in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice. His military service remained a lifelong source of pride, and he continued to support fellow veterans as a Life Member of Brigadier General.

Leon was previously employed as a custodian at Washington and Lee University, a cook at Fancy Hill Restaurant in Natural Bridge, and Earl Austin’s right-hand man at Crossroads Auto Sales in Glasgow.

He leaves to cherish a son, Leon Jr. (Andrea); grandsons, Leon, III, Ari and Liam; brothers, Clifford Fields (Brenda) and Russell Fields; aunt, Barbara Johnson; uncle, George Bolden (Geraldine); and former wife, Wilma; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, fellow veterans, extended family and friends. Leon will be remembered for his courage, generosity and infectious humor.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 15, at 2 p.m. at the James E. Thompson Community Center, 207 Catawba Street, Glasgow. A repast will follow the service.
