Sidney (Moe) Maurice Chapman, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away on September 10, 2026, at the age of 62, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and a lifetime of memories that will forever be treasured.
He was born July 19, 1964 in West Virginia.
Moe was a man whose greatest pride and joy was his family. Above all else, he cherished being a father and grandfather. His children and grandchildren were the center of his world, and nothing brought him greater happiness than watching them grow, sharing in their lives, and simply spending time with the people he loved most.
Moe is survived by his son, Christopher “Bo” Chapman, and his wife, Tammy Chapman, and their children, Christopher Chapman Jr., Terry Laubach III, Jayden Laubach, and Liliann Laubach; and his daughter, Heather Butler, and her husband, Matthew Butler, and their children, Elizabeth “Izzy”, Audrey, and Cora.
Moe also dearly loved his many siblings and treasured the bonds they shared throughout his life.
He is survived by his brothers, Jimmy Curtis Chapman, Dennis Lee Hinton, and Basil T. May; and his sisters, Lesia Chapman Newcomb, Phyllis “Jo” Hinton Linton, Hazel May Persinger, Trenia May Critzer, and Wanda May Randozzo.
Moe was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Cline Hinton Chapman; his father, James Ray Chapman; and his mom and dad, Glenda May and Basil May Sr.
Those who knew Moe will remember him as a pillar of positivity. He had a remarkable ability to look for the good in life and always tried to see the best in every situation and every person. Even when life was difficult, Moe carried with him a spirit of optimism that could lift the people around him.
He loved deeply, laughed freely, and valued the time he was able to spend with those closest to him. His family was not simply a part of his life — they were the heart of it.
A memorial service is set Saturday, September 19, 2026 at 2 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home-Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, Virginia.
