"Miss Nitza" Succumbs After Long Illness

Nitza Peter Macheras, age 81, of Lexington, succumbed to a lengthy illness on Sunday, April 29, 2007.

She was born on August 20, 1925.

She attended schools in Lexington, graduated from Lexington High School and went to Mary Washington University.

For many yeaers she owned and operated the Dutch Inn. She valued the historical site of the building on Washington Street.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Green Orthodox Church in Roanoke.

She is survived by her two sisters: Thalia Macheras of Lexington, VA; and Iris Vlandis of Stamford, CT; and a sister-in-law, Eve Macheras of Lexington.

Nitza had many loving nephews, nieces, god-children, and cousins.

A native of Lexington always recognized her strolling Main Street, greeting friends and neighbors.

For many years, she was assistant manager of the Southern Inn, a vertiable landmark in town for 75 years, in which position she was affectionately known as "Miss Nitza."

She had an outgoing manner and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Father Dean Nastors officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2007 with a Trisagion at 7 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
