LHS Class Of 1944 Valedictorian Had Long Local Banking Career

Virginia Lackey Mays, 81, of Lexington, died Sunday, September 30, 2007 at The Mayflower.

She was born August 31, 1926 at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital, the daughter of the late John Henry Lackey and Vada Huffman Lackey.

She graduated from Lexington High School as Valedicorian of the class of 1944 and entered the field of banking at the First National Bank, transferring to the Rockbridge National Bank in 1945.

She attended the University of Virginia Commercial Banking School and completed law, banking and real estate courses at Phillip's Business College, Roanoke College, and Dabney Lancaster Community College, as well as attended many seminars and classes presented by the Virginia Banker's Association.

She served on the advisory unit of the Regional Area Banker's Association, the Advisory Board of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Bank Administration Institute, and was a past member and past Chairman of the Central Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Bank Women, Inc.

After 45 years of service, she retired as Vice President/Loans from Crestar Bank.

She was a past member and past president of the Lexington Junior Woman's Club, past member of the Lexington-Rockbridge County Board of Realtors, a charter member of the Lexington Country Club, a past treasurer of the Friends of the library, and past treasurer of the Rockbridge Chapter of the Easter Seal Society.

She served briefly on the Shenandoah Planning Commission. She was a member and past president of the Business and Professional Woman's Organization of Rockbridge County and when it disbanded, remained a member of the BPW Alumnae.

As a member of the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary, she worked at the Auxiliary Thrift Shop since her retirement in 1990.

She was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church, and of Circle 5 of the Women of the Church.

Her favorite pastimes since retirement have been her two bridge clubs, camping and entertaining friends and family.

Mrs. Mays was preceded in death by her husband of 0 years, James E. "Jim" Mays.

She is survived by one son, James Gregory Mays and wife, Vickie; three grandchildren: James Patrick Mays, Olivia Ryan Moore and Gregory Hunter Moore; one brother, Thomas H. Lackey, Clermont, FL.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Dr. William Klein officiating. Burial will follow in the New Monmouth Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, Va. 24450.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
