Obituary for Teresa Hughes Steele Teresa Hughes Steele
Active Lioness Club Member Enjoyed Sewing, Needlework

Teresa Hughes Steele, 90, of Lexington died peacefully Wednesday, January 14, 2009 after a short illness.

She was born November 22, 1918 in Kerrs Creek, a daughter of the late Rachel Medora Hartbarger and Soult Murat Hughes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred A. Steele, Sr. and a sister, Naomi Hughes German.

Surviving are a brother, Dessaix B. Hughes of Fairfield; four children: Fred A. Steele, Jr. of Easley, SC; Maxine Hickman of Lexington; Olivia Falls of Rustburg, VA; and Sarah Anderson of Ridgewood, NJ; eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mrs. Steele attended the Denmark School in Kerrs Creek.

She was an active member of the Lioness Club, of which she was a charter member, and the Lions Club. Some of her favorite pastimes were sewing and needlework, especially English hand smocking. She also enjoyed cooking and was known for her pound cake.

Mrs. Steele was a member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church and regularly attended Millboro Christian Church in Millboro, VA.

The family will accept visitors at the home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Millboro Christian Church, Millboro, VA; Manly Memorial Baptist Church, Lexington, VA; or the Lexington Lions Club for Sight Services.

A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Williams and Dr. J. Michael Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow at New Monmouth Presbyterian Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
