Homemaker Was Grace Brethren Church Member

Shirley Louise Phillips Highlander, 65, of 117 E. Trout Street, Covington, died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.

She was born May 27, 1944 in Alderson, West Virginia, a daughter of the late James M. and Clara Boyd Phillips.

Mrs. Highlander was a homemaker and was a member of the Grace Brethren Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Gail Highlander in 1976.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, W. Hugh Highlander of Covington; her daughter, Terry Lynn Wood and her husband, Kevin of Newport News; her son, William A. "Billy" Highlander and his wife, Monique of Goldsboro, NC; five grandchildren, Tyler Wood, Trevor Wood and Kaitlyn Wood, all of Newport News; Stephanie Highlander and Shelby Highlander, both of Goldsboro, NC; two sisters, Barbara and Joe Bradley of Alderson, WV and Nancy and Lee Feamster of Charleston, WV; three brothers, James and Mary Phillips of Forest City, NC; Eddie and Carol Phillips of Radcliff, KY; and Pat and Devina Phillips of Alderson; a brother-in-law, Paul and Vickie Highlander of Knightdale, NC; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009 in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Gillette officiating.

The interment will be made in the Alleghany Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family received friends Friday evening at the Arritt Funeral Home.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the Shirley Highlander Memorial Fund: In care of, Grace Brethren Church, 2507 S. Carpenter Drive, Covington, VA 24426.

The Arritt Funeral Home, Covington, Virginia, handled the arrangements.
