Alleghany County Public Works Retiree Was Korean War Veteran

Tavner Owens (Tab) Tingler, age 79, of 9810 Rich Patch Road, Low Moor, died Monday, July 20, 2009 at his residence.

He was born June 20, 1930 in Alleghany County, Virginia, a son of the late Leck Lee Tingler and Emma Kimberlin Tingler.

He served in the United States Army in Korea from 1952 to 1954 as a combat engineer and received a medal for Korea National Defense Service, as well as the Korean Service Medal and Bronze Star, and the United Nations Service Medal.

He was a retired truck driver for Alleghany County Public Works and various construction companies.

He loved to camp and fish with his family on the Shenandoah River on the farm owned by special friend Howard Lowry, and enjoyed playing his guitar.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Tavner Tingler, Jr. in 1973, six brothers: George Tingler, Robert Tingler, Paul Tingler, William "June" Tingler, Billy K. Tingler, and a brother in infancy; and a sister, Helen Richmond.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Frances "Sally" Knighton Tingler of Low Moor; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Michael Jack of Clifton Forge, Mary and Robbie Jack, Jr. of Clifton Forge, and Norma Callahan and friend, Bob of West Virginia; three sons: Richard Tingler and friend, Vicki of Low Moor, Michael Tingler and wife, Margie of Low Moor, and James Tingler and wife, Anita of Clifton Forge; a sister, Christine Schettino of Covington, a brother, Meredith Tingler of Low Moor, two sisters-in-law, Elaine Tingler and Virginia Tingler, both of Low Moor; a brother-in-law, Thomas Tingler of Low Moor; twelve grandchildren,: Amanda Madison and husband, Scottie, Michael Jack, Jr. and friend, Angel, Stacy Webb and husband, Scotty, Milissa Kimberlin and husband, Chuck, Robbie Jack III, Tabatha Jack, Jesica Callahan, Lauren Straub, Jason, John, Timmy Thomas and wife Sherry, and Stephanie Tingler; fifteen great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, and dogs, Fuzz and Smokey.

In keeping with his wishes, his body was cremated. Friends may call anytime at the residence, 9810 Rich Patch Road, Low Moor.

Arrangements were handled by the Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, Virginia.
