Homemaker Was Epworth United Methodist Church Member

Atley Gray Thurston Broughman, age 72, of Friendship Manor in Roanoke, and formerly of Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Friday, May 14, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.

Born July 9, 1937 in Selma, Virginia, Atley was a daughter of the late Arthur Lee and Dorothea Persinger Thurston.

She was a homemaker throughout her life and a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, where she was a former choir member. She enjoyed crafts and sewing.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy Nelson Broughman, Jr. in 1982; two daughters, Melissa Broughman in infancy, and Susan Virginia Broughman Yopp, and a sister, Ellen Louise Byer.

She is survived by three sons, Lacy Broughman and wife, Sarah, George Broughman and wife, Kathy, and Melvin Broughman, all of Clifton Forge; a sister, Katherine Thurston Sheppard of Roanoke; five brothers, Arthur Lee "Bucky" Thurston and wife, Mary Jean of Craig County, James Thurston and wife, Barbara Ann of Vinton, Randall Thurston and wife, Judy of Roanoke, Paul Andrew Thurston and wife, Lois of Eagle Rock, and Joseph Thurston and wife, Sue of Eagle Rock; four grandchildren, Afton B. Nicely and husband, Lucas, Justin Broughman, Lauren Broughman, and Lacy Broughman IV; two great grandchildren, Tanner Broughman and Mackenzie Nicely and a host of nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge with Pastor Mike Rollins. Interment will follow. The family will assemble at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, then proceed to the cemetery. There will be no evening visitation. However, the family will receive friends following the service on Tuesday at the Life House on Fairview Heights, Clifton Forge or any time at the residence of George and Kathy Broughman, 105 Red Hill Drive, Clifton Forge, Virginia.
