Obituary for Roy Calvin Brown Roy Calvin Brown
World War II Navy Veteran Was Former C&O Engineer

Roy Calvin Brown, age 88, of 836 Madison Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at his residence.

He was born January 14, 1923 in Clifton Forge to the late Everett Roy and Anna Margaret Craig Brown.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He was a retired railroad engineer for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad and Amtrak, and belonged to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

He was a member of the Clifton Forge Elks Lodge B.P.O.E., the Clifton Forge High School Alumni Association, and the Griffith Knob Hunt Club since 1985.

He was a member, Elder, and choir member at the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, and volunteered at the Food Pantry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Robinson and Frances Nelson, and a grandson, Nathan Hagler.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hall Brown of Clifton Forge; five daughters, Rebecca Laxton of Newport News, Rita Kay Gibson of Four Oaks, NC, Barbara Hagler of Jacksonville, FL, and Margaret Ann Fryman and Susan Byzet, both of Lexington, KY; a son, Robert Bernie Gibson, Jr. of Clifton Forge; special nephew, Wayne Robinson and special niece, Cindy Robinson; fifteen greatly loved grandchildren, including two special grandchildren, Jayson Higgins and Tana Ackerman; twenty-four great grandchildren, including two very special great grandchildren, Hunter Higgins and Gage Higgins; and many friends, including Mike and Sharon Braxton of Covington.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Paul Brokaw and Reverend W. Pembroke Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be Carl Brinkley, Tommy Slusser, Bill Hardbarger, Jayson Higgins, Travis Gibson, Jason Gibson, and Justin Boyd. The family received friends on Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, and other times at the residence. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 544 Church Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
