Obituary for John Melford Shifflett John Melford Shifflett
Bath County Native Was Coach, Church Elder

John Melford Shifflett, 37, of 102 Sherry May Street, Covington, Virginia, died Saturday, April 16, 2011.

Mr. Shifflett was born February 20, 1974, in Bath County, a son of Robert and Charlotte Swearingen Shifflett of Hot Springs.

John was the property manager and co-owner of Riverview Investments, consisting of Parklin Terrace Apartments and the Jackson River Gardening Center.

He was a 1992 graduate of Alleghany High School.

John was a member and Elder of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was active as an assistant coach for Little League softball and basketball teams and enjoyed the outdoors as an avid golfer.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Jill Walker Shifflett of Covington; two daughters, Makenzie K. Shifflett and Maryemma A. Shifflett, both at home; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Barbara Shifflett, Bob and Barbara Shifflett and David and Teresa Shifflett, all of Covington; one sister and brother-in-law, Lorie and Lewis Porterfield of Buchanan; nephews and nieces, Justin Shifflett, Daniel Shifflett, Lacey Shifflett, Katie Porterfield and Casey Porterfield; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Van and Brenda Walker of Covington; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral service will be held Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael C. Fleenor officiating.

In keeping with Johns' wishes, his body will be cremated after the funeral service on Thursday evening.

Following the service, the family will receive friends at the church. Friends may pay their respects at any time at Arritt Funeral Home.

The family suggests that donations in John's name be made to the McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church Building and Grounds Fund.
