Obituary for Eunice Hayslett Dull Eunice Hayslett Dull
Longtime Sunday School Teacher Was Devout Democrat

Eunice Hayslett Dull, 92, of Covington, Virginia, formerly of Chesapeake, died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Lewis Gale Hospital, Alleghany, in Low Moor.

She was born December 24, 1918 in Selma, Virginia, to loving parents, Benjamin H. Hayslett, Sr. and Gertrude Ayers Hayslett, eighth in line of eleven children.

She attended school in Selma, and Central High School in Low Moor.

Beginning at eighteen years of age, she taught Sunday School at Epworth United Methodist Church in Selma, and later at Cradock United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, continuing until the age of 72.

For forty-three years, she was a faithful member of the Chancel Choir. As a member of Cradock United Methodist Church, she was coordinator of Children's Ministries, served as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of Missions, and served on the Administrative Board for over ten years. During her service at Cradock United Methodist Church, Eunice ("Nu Nu" to most children) initiated the "Giving Tree".

She served as the Hats, Scarves, Socks, and Gloves Tree, which she initiated, and Chairman of Church and Society. She attended Methodist Church Conference frequently. For seventeen years, she served as a Consultant in the Portsmouth Methodist District Children's Committee, which contained 64 churches.

She was a member of the United Methodist Women and Circles, Brentwood Garden Club, Democratic Women's Club, and Chesapeake Hospital Women's Auxiliary, and was Vice-President of National Association of Retired Federal Employees-Portsmouth Chapter.

As a devout Democrat, she attended many Democratic conventions.

She was a long distance telephone operator in Norfolk, Clifton Forge, Covington and Portsmouth.

Eunice loved children and made her life about serving and encouraging them.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, James W. "Doc" Dull; three sisters, Edith Hayslett, Frances Johnson, and Norma Dodd; and six brothers, Leo Hayslett, Earl Hayslett, Francis Hayslett, Homer Hayslett, Benjamin Hayslett, and Roy Hayslett.

She is survived by a sister, Wanda Jean Hayslett Irvine and husband Carl "Pete" of Covington; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Haynes Hayslett of Selma and Helen Hayslett of Lynchburg; and a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, and her children of her heart, whom she raised from infancy: Erin, Scott, Steven, Jessica and Chris Matthews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Bill Hartsfield and Pat Scruggs officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Epworth United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 190, Selma, Virginia or to Cradock United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, Virginia.
