Jon Rowland Shumate, of Rockbridge Baths, VA, died Thursday, July 14, 2011.

Born November 21, 1933 in Amesbury, MA, he was a son of the late Robert Payton Shumate and Margarite Kelley Shumate.

Jon served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He retired from IBM after a 43-year career, the last 24 years of which were spent in Florida.

Jon and Dolly retired to Rockbridge Baths in 2001.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Dolly Shumate; one son, Robert Shumate (Tamara) of Versailles, KY; three daughters, Joni Vining of Lithia Springs, GA, Kelly Shumate and Stephanie Shumate of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren and two great grandsons; one brother, Robert P. Shumate (Sara).

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Lexington, VA, with Pastor Hank Boschen officiating.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home and interment will be private.
