Rockbridge County Native Was World War II Veteran, Virginia Power Retiree

James Alfred Snider, Jr., 83 of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, in Destin, Florida.

He was born June 27, 1928 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, a son of the late James Alfred Snider, Sr. and Margaret Heck Barger Snider.

He attended Natural Bridge High School, then served his country during the later part of World War II in the United States Army. After the war he attended Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance, Virginia.

He met his future wife, Jane, on a blind date in 1950 and was married on June 9th, 1951.

He worked for Dominion Resources (Virginia Electric Power Co) from 1950 to 1988. Upon retirement they spent many joyful days on his family farm in Rockbridge County. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Jane Carolyn Power Snider, in 2008, and son, James Timothy Snider, in 1967.

He is survived by his son, Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Edward Snider, daughter-in-law, Christina Timmons-Snider, and granddaughter, Katie Jane Snider of Destin, Florida; brother, Edward B. Snide,r and sister-in-law, Rheta B. Snider of Rockbridge County, Virginia; brother-in-law, William P. Jones of Burlington North Carolina; and sister-in-law, Pauline Power of Richmond, Virginia.

Family night will be from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012 at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday January 14 at Westminster Presbyterian Church by Pastor Carol Seaman. The interment service will be held at Riverview Cemetery, Waynesboro. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1904 Mount Vernon Street, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980; or, the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, 201 West Broad Street, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980; or to your favorite charity.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to his nursing staff at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach, Florida.
