Alleghany County Native Dies In Roanoke At Age 77

Doris Conner Williams, age 77, of 64 Big Turn Lane, Lexington, Virginia, died Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Friendship Healthcare Center in Roanoke.

She was born February 8, 1935 in Alleghany County, Virginia, to the late James Andrew and Blanche Ballard Armstrong Conner.

She was a homemaker throughout her life and was a member of Central Advent Christian Church, where she had previously served as a Sunday school secretary and taught Sunday school.

She loved gardening and tending her flowers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Williams in 1999 and two brothers, Hubert Lee Armstrong and Palmer Eugene Armstrong.

She is survived by a son, Johnnie Everett Williams of Roanoke; a brother, Andrew Harold Conner and wife, Margaret of Lexington; two sisters-in-law, Marie Armstrong of Clifton Forge and Dorothy Armstrong of Lexington; three grandchildren, Kaylyn Williams, Johnathan Williams, and Joshua Williams; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Louis Dodd and Reverend Gene Peters officiating. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Booth, Kenny Carroll, Larry Smith, Calvin Conner, Donald Conner, Hubert Armstrong, and Earl Conner.

The family received friends on Wednesday evening at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Central Advent Christian Church Building Fund, 3515 Longdale Furnace Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia 24422 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Central & Western Virginia Chapter, 3959 Electric Road, Suite 357, Roanoke, Virginia 24018.
