Obituary for Leonard S. Stewart Sr. Leonard S. Stewart Sr.
Kroger Retiree Was Active In His Community

Leonard S. Stewart Sr., 68, of Lexington, Virginia, was called to rest Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

Born February 2, 1944 in Rockbridge County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mamie Dock Stewart.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Dock, Preston Dock, Josie Dock Jefferson, Mildred Dock, Kenneth Stewart and Patricia Stewart Kenney.

Leonard devoted himself to providing for his family and serving his community.

He retired from Kroger grocery stores after 25 years of service.

He has been a coach of youth league basketball, men's baseball team and women's softball team.

He was soloist, an elementary school crossing guard, a chartered member of Joppa Lodge #329 and a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Buena Vista, where he was a member of the Deacon Board.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Ruth Dunn Stewart, of Lexington; one son, Leonard S. Stewart Jr. and wife, Tammi, of Lexington; daughters, Pipa Stewart Winchester of Orlando, Fla., Monique Stewart Moore and husband, Leonard, of Greensboro, N.C. and Tina Taylor Johnson, of Staunton; sister, Hattie Stewart, of Lexington; two brothers, Henry Stewart, of Petersburg and James Stewart and wife, Ann, of Lexington; grandchildren, Byron Winchester, Kodey Moore, Sydney Thomas, Sterling Taylor and Javantae Johnson; a very special and loving niece, Mamie Henderson and God-son, Garfield Lewis; two sisters-in-law, Mary Stephens, of Natural Bridge and Jacqueline Neal, of Maryland; two brothers-in-law, Rev. John Dunn Jr. and wife, Doris, of Fort Washington and David Dunn and wife, Pamela, of Natural Bridge.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at First Baptist Church, Lexington with the Rev. Carl Tinsley officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, but the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
