Frances Bosserman Lackey (Funny), died peacefully on Monday, September 3, 2012, with her family by her side.

She was born on February 15, 1918, the youngest child of the late Bruce Hansford and Elizabeth Day (Bette) Bosserman.

She graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1936 and received a Normal Professional Teaching Degree from Madison College in 1938.

In 1969, she returned to James Madison University and completed her degree work, receiving a BS degree in Elementary Education.

During her 32 year teaching career, she touched the lives of many children, beginning in a one-room school in Borden's Run and ending at Central Elementary School.

She was known for her humor, her sense of fairness and her discipline. Even in her later years, her former students often stopped her and reminisced about their time in her classroom and what she had taught them or instilled in them.

She was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church, the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary, and the Retired Teachers' Association of Rockbridge County.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Frank Lackey.

Her survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Betty Stuart and Kent McMichael; the daughters of her sisters, who were like daughters to her: Nancy Chalkley, Shirley (Rody) Rhodes, and Peggy Cox; sisters-in-law, Marcia Bosserman, Jeanne Lackey, Ruth Lackey; brother-in-law Mc Sterrett; and many more nieces and nephews who all loved their "Aunt Funny".

The family is forever grateful to the staff of Havenwood, who loved her and treated her with kindness and gentleness, especially in her final days, and to the, special folks of Hospice, who guided everyone through the transition.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at the ARP Cemetery in Timber Ridge, Va.

There will not be a family night. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Rockbridge Area Hospice or the charity of your choice.
