Obituary for Benjamin Phillip Carter, Jr. Benjamin Phillip Carter, Jr.
U.S. Army Veteran Was Former VDOT Custodian

Mr. Benjamin Phillip Carter, Jr., age 88, of Covington, died Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, Low Moor.

He was the husband of Martha Persinger Carter.

Mr. Carter was born January 9, 1924 in Covington, the son of the late Benjamin Phillip Carter, Sr. and Era Glover Carter.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army.

Mr. Carter was employed as a custodian with the Virginia Highway Department for ten years.

He was a member of Callahan Church of God of Prophecy. Mr. Carter enjoyed hunting, fishing, making wind chimes and working on mowers and tillers.

In addition to his wife of sixty-two years, Martha Persinger Carter, Mr. Carter is survived by one son, Gary Phillip Carter and wife, Janice of Covington; one daughter, Peggy Carter Mullen of Raleigh, NC; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two great -great grandchildren; and two sisters, Nancy C. Bookman of Hampton and Inez C. Frye and husband, Jimmy of Covington.

Mr. Carter was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2012, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Freddie Bonds officiating, assisted by the Rev. C.J. Mize.

Pallbearers will be Glennie Davis, James Tucker, W. F. Carter, Pete Richardson, Howard Liptrap, and Ray Snedegar, II. Alternate pallbearers will be Bob Shifflett and Dale Lowry.

The family received friends on Thursday evening at Loving Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence of Inez C. Frye and husband, Jimmy, 2511 Jackson River Road, Covington.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Callaghan Church of God of Prophecy, C/O Rev. C.J. Mize, 518 W. Locust Street, Covington, VA 24426.
