Obituary for James Talmadge (Jimmy) Jewell James Talmadge (Jimmy) Jewell
Montgomery County Native Was USPS Retiree

James Talmadge (Jimmy) Jewell, 95, of Lexington, Virginia, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at his home.

Born January 2, 1918, in Montgomery County, he was a son of the late Rev. Garland R. Jewell and Effie Atkinson Jewell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Henson Jewell; one sister, Eva Taylor, and his stepmother, Mildred Russ Jewell.

Mr. Jewell was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren, and retired from the United States Postal Service, where he delivered the first letter in Buena Vista.

Jimmy proudly served his country in World War II (Japanese Field), and was a member of the American Legion. He also was a life member of the Buena Vista Fire Department, and went on the fire call when the old Natural Bridge Hotel caught fire.

Jimmy operated a store in Buena Vista, had a butcher shop, and loved to fish for trout.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Hendershot Jewell; one son, James William Jewell; one daughter, Motty Moore and Charlie Rowsey; two sister, Mae McCaul; Dot Hare; one brother, Melton Jewell; six grandchildren, Amy Caputa and husband, Mike; Beth Wells and husband, Troy; Kelly Clark; Jennifer Jewell and Tommy Ruley; Jill Howard and husband, Kevin; Jamey Moore and wife, Felicia; 15 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Dr. Crews, hospice nurses, Sue and Pam, all other volunteers, the Rev. Bain and the Rev. Barb for the help during Jimmy's illness.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. W. David Bain and the Rev. Russ Barb officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Buena Vista.
