Obituary for Annetta Neal Shires Annetta Neal Shires
Longtime Clifton Forge Resident Was Leader, Chef, Frequent Traveler

Annetta Neal Shires, age 92, of 1115 Linden Ave., Clifton Forge, Virginia, passed away Monday April 22, 2013 in Arlington, VA.

She was born August 14, 1920 in Frankfort, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Guy and Fannie Neal.

She was married on September 8, 1941 to Lewis L. Shires and they moved their family to Clifton Forge, VA in 1956, where she lived and worked at Leggett's Department Store.

She was an active member of the First Christian Church, a devoted wife, and mother. She was always engaged as a leader from school age to retirement. She played basketball on her high school team all four years. She was an extraordinary chef whose tasty meals were known far and wide.

During retirement she loved to travel with Lewis, visiting Florida, California, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Hawaii.

Her husband, Lewis, passed away in 2009.

She is survived by two daughters, Ramona Hughes, of New Port Richey, FL, and Sharon Watson and her husband, Tony, of Arlington, VA; five grandchildren, Todd Hughes and his wife, Karen, of New Port Richey, FL; Denise Hughes, of Bartow, FL, Annetta Trotter and her husband, Ivan, of New Port Richey, FL; Erica Watson, of Gales Ferry, CT, and Lindsay Watson, of Whitehall, PA; six great grandchildren, T. J. Hughes, Ty Trotter, Andre Trotter, Nikko Trotter, Joaquin Lopez-Watson and Sasha Lopez-Watson, 20 nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by three sisters: Rhonda Scott, of Richmond, VA, Reta Hobbs, of Richmond, VA, and Maxie Holiday, of Fairlea, WV; two sisters-in-law: Marilyn Shires, of Kokomo, IN, and Pat Neal of Deltona, FL; and her buddy, Abby.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Glenn Clements officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ P.O. Box 63 Clifton forge, VA 24422.
