Clifton Forge Resident Was World War II Veteran, MeadWestvaco Retiree

Lawrence Harless Clark, age 91, of 300 Clark Lane, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at LewisGale Hospital - Alleghany in Low Moor.

He was born December 23, 1921 in Collierstown, Virginia, to the late Lewis Harvey and Piney Wilhelm Clark.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Invasion of Normandy, and was a disabled veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was a pipefitter for MeadWestvaco, retiring after 46 years. He belonged to the Pipefitters Union, was an active member of the Longdale United Methodist Church, as well as a member of the Covington Moose Lodge and the Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033.

He helped create the Sharon Volunteer Fire Department and the Westvaco Rescue Squad and was an honorary member of the Westvaco Fire Department.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph Clark, Sherman Clark, and Ed Clark; and two sisters, Ethel Tyne and Charlotte Clark.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine Craft Clark of Clifton Forge; three daughters, Donna Crush of Covington, Linda Stull and husband Billy of Rich Patch, Covington, and Ellen Sue Ruff of Fincastle; a son, Dennis E. Clark of Longdale; eight sisters, Mildred Rowsey of Collierstown, Edith Haynes of Covington, Florence Hostetter of Collierstown, Shirley Bayne of Lexington, Alma Wines and husband, Monk of Lexington, Peggy Ford of Lexington, Frances Hostetter of Natural Bridge and Alice Newcomb of Buena Vista; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and special friend, Cindy Gier of Clifton Forge.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Lester Kennedy officiating. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home.
