Alleghany County Native Was Peerless Creamery Retiree, Lance Salesman

Meredith Richard (Dickie) Byer, age 75, of 9804 Rich Patch Road, Low Moor, Virginia, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013 at his residence.

He was born October 5, 1937 in Alleghany County, Virginia, to the late Meredith Carper Byer and Roxie Evelyn Armentrout Byer.

He grew up in Alleghany County and graduated from Boiling Springs School.

He was retired from Peerless Creamery of Clifton Forge and was a salesman for Lance, Inc. He served in the Virginia National Guard for eight years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Wayne Byer in 1982.

Dickie is survived by his wife of over 20 years, Kathy Lynn Elmore Byer of Low Moor; two daughters, Patsy Ann Sampson and husband, Robert of Covington and Susan Ward and husband, Raymond of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Carrie Thomas and husband, Dave of Washington, D.C., Megan Eberle and husband, Allen of Charlottesville, Beth Nelson and husband, John of Princeton, WV; a special nephew, Bobby Byer and wife, Anita of Covington; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Mary Elmore; three brothers-in-law, Robert Elmore, Jr. and wife, Sara, Joseph Elmore and wife, Amanda, and Wesley Elmore; three sisters-in-law, Connie Gunter and husband, Lee, Mary Ellen Elmore, and Melissa Clark and husband, Jimmy (Bo); and several nieces and nephews and other relatives and a number of nieces and one nephew.

Special thanks to Hospice members and a special thanks to Carolyn Amanda and Tonya.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Gordon Hammond officiating.

Interment will follow in Lone Star Cemetery, Covington. Active pallbearers are Austin Clark, Aaron Thompson, Bobby Broughman, Jr., Brandon Gunter, Ronald Elmore, Jr., Robert Elmore III, Wesley Elmore, and Tommy Tingler. Alternate pallbearers will be Robert Elmore, Jr., and Lee Gunter. The family received friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
