Obituary for Mary Stigall (Betsy) Brittigan Mary Stigall (Betsy) Brittigan
Texas Native Was W&L Retiree, Longtime Lexington Presbyterian Church Member

Mary Stigall (Betsy) Brittigan, 76, of Lexington, Virginia, died Monday, August 26, 2013, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington.

She was born August 1, 1937, in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of the late John Brutus Stigall and Mary McClellan Stigall.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Clark Brittigan; and two sons, Robert Stigall Brittigan and David McClellan Brittigan.

Betsy was a longtime member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church.

For a decade, she and her husband, Dan, were foster parents for over 100 children at the Rockbridge Area Presbyterian Home.

After her retirement from the Leyburn Library at Washington & Lee, Betsy was a devoted volunteer for Rockbridge Area Hospice, where she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by one daughter, Macy Coffey and husband, Dan, of Lexington; one son, John Brittigan and wife, Giedra, of Atlanta, Texas; two grandchildren, Brittigan Coffey and Talmadge Coffey, both of Lexington; and one sister, Claudia Vick and husband, Al, of Richardson, Texas.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013, at the Lexington Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Klein officiating. The family requests that donations be made in memory of Betsy for all of her years of dedication and hard work to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450 or to Saint Francis Service Dogs, P.O. Box 19538, Roanoke, VA 24019.
