Obituary for Mary Catherine Montgomery Layne Mary Catherine Montgomery Layne
Homemaker, Babysitter Was Formerly Of Clifton Forge

Mary Catherine Montgomery Layne, age 89, of Trinity Mission Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rocky Mount, Virginia, and formerly of Clifton Forge, died Thursday, August 29, 2013 in Rocky Mount.

Mary was born June 30, 1924 in Millboro, Virginia, to the late Robert and Anna Burnette Montgomery.

She was a homemaker and a babysitter for many children throughout her life.

She was a member of the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, and along with her husband, was an avid Virginia Tech Hokies fan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Harvey "Whiskers" Layne, who died in January of 2010 after 59 years of marriage.

She is survived by two daughters, Paula Carey and husband, Donald of Edmond, OK, and Susan Ann Layne of Rocky Mount; a son, Mason Allen Layne and wife, Angie of Glade Hill; three grandchildren, Dale Carey and wife, Susan, Melanie Carey, and Jacob William Layne; a great granddaughter, Caitlyn Hope Carey; and special cousins, MaryBeth Broughman, her husband Kippy, and their children, Tyler and Brian, and Norma Jean and Jack Nicely.

The family wishes to thank Trinity Mission Health and Rehab for their great care during her last month.

A funeral service was conducted on Sunday, September 1 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Paul Brokaw officiating. Interment followed in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor.

Pallbearers were Tom O'Meara, Mickey McMillion, Jack Simpson, Tyler Broughman, Kippy Broughman, Punky Averill, Bob Bartley, and Brian Broughman.

The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church Building Fund, PO Box 20, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.

The Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, VA, handled the arrangements.
