Obituary for Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Moore Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Moore
Former Rockbridge County Treasurer Was Longtime New Monmouth Presbyterian Church Member

Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Moore, 93, of Lexington, Virginia, died Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

Ms. Moore was born June 5, 1920, in Rockbridge County to the late Harry Earl Moore, Jr. and Lula Strain McCorkle Moore.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harry E. Moore.

She is survived by three sisters, Lula McCorkle Moore Sterrett of Newport News, Va., caregiver sister Alice Moore Bradshaw of Bedford, Va., Jane Moore Stockhausen of Bradenton, Fla.; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Ms. Moore was a lifelong member of the New Monmouth Presbyterian Church, which named her Elder Emeritus in 1998 in recognition of her loyal and faithful service to the Church.

In 2005 she was recognized by the church for seventy-five years of faithful membership.

Libby graduated from Lexington High School and Business Courses in 1941. She worked briefly for the Rockbridge Farmers Coop. and as assistant to the County Treasurer for 12 years. From 1954 to 1967, she served as Rockbridge County Treasurer and was elected President of the Treasurers' Association of Virginia in 1966-67.

From 1968 to 1985 she was employed by General Shale Products Corporation (formerly Locher Brick Co.)

She enjoyed a longtime membership in the Business and Professional Women's Club of Lexington.

Libby lived with her parents at Rock Retreat Dairy Farm on Whistle Creek until the farm was sold. She helped provide the homecoming center for family gatherings over many years.

Libby's Lexington nephews and their families have been like children of her own since they were born. They have been loving caregivers to "Aunt Libby" for many years. They are Garrett Moore and wife, Joyce, and their daughters, Hillary and Ashley, and Jim Moore and wife, Jeri, and their son Will.

A celebration of Libby's life will be held at a later date with private burial at New Monmouth Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Monmouth Presbyterian Church, 2348 W. Midland Trail, Lexington, VA 24450. There will not be visitation at the funeral home.
