Longtime Owner Of Whispering Pines Campground Dies At Age 86

Abbie Lee Johnson Hostetter, age 86, of 3708 Douthat Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 following a brief illness at Brian Center Adult Care Facility in Low Moor.

She was born January 22, 1928 in Augusta, Virginia, to the late Rolen H. and Cora Warlitner Johnson.

In 1946, Abbie and her husband opened G.I. Joe's Texaco Station in Selma, which they operated together for fifteen years.

Following that, they purchased the land and developed Whispering Pines Campground, and co-managed there for fifty years.

She was a member of Walton Memorial United Methodist Church for many years, where she served as Financial Secretary, was on the Counting Committee, and was Sunday School Secretary until her illness.

She also was a member of the choir, which she truly loved. She was a homemaker and a loving mother. She had a passion for the outdoors, and enjoyed working in her flower gardens and sitting on the porch watching the birds and wildlife that surrounded her home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Aubrey E. "Pat" Hostetter in December of 2003; a brother, James Johnson; and a sister, Frances Belcher.

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Hostetter Wood and husband, Bill of Clifton Forge; two step granddaughters, Tracy Stewart and husband, Jon of Christiansburg, and Rhonda Doyle and husband, David of Daleville; five nieces, Carol Entsminger and husband, Mike of Clifton Forge, Linda May and husband, Ralph of Covington, Betty Crowder of Collinsville, Shirley Severe of Queenstown, MD, and Mary Truitt of Chesapeake; and two nephews, Tony Belcher and wife, Traci of Clifton Forge, and George Tucker of Covington.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Lester Kennedy officiating.

Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery, Botetourt County.

Pallbearers will be Jon Stewart, David Doyle, Chris Wiley, Randy Lawrence, Rodney Kenley and Cliff Potter. The family received friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Bill and Melissa Wood, 3700 Douthat Road, Clifton Forge.
