On April 1, 2014, Essie Byers Lanum, 91, of Buena Vista, Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior.

She was born October 8, 1922 in Amherst County, the daughter of the late James W. Byers and Florence Stinnett Byers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Richard Grant and John Lanum; one son, Lowell Thomas Byers; also brothers and sisters, Henley, Harry, Claude, Berry, Carl, Pheny, Jasper, Lilliam, Annie, Ethel, Odell, Ruth, Helen, Joney, Olgia, and Dimpley.

She is survived by two brothers, Ray Byers of Bedford and Earl Byers of North Carolina. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Judith Lanum, and a stepson, Lewis Lanum; also step-grandchildren, and step-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was an active member of the Oronoco Church of the Brethren in Amherst County.

Essie was a loving caring person to all her family and friends and all that she met.

Essie owned and operated Friendly Outlet for many years.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Bolling, Grose, and Lotts Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Oronoco Church of the Brethren, 7742 Lexington Turnpike, Vesuvius, VA 24483.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Buena Vista, VA.
