Rockbridge County Native Had Successful Writing Career

Barbara Dod Smith Whittle, 84, of Lexington, Virginia, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at her home.

Born April 4, 1929 in Washington, DC, a daughter of the late Hubert H. Dod and Lucille Martin Dod.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Robert C. Smith and John R. Whittle.

Mrs. Whittle was a native of Rockbridge County and had a lifelong involvement in community work.

She was currently a board member of Preservation Va.-APva, member and docent with Rockbridge Historical Society, and a board member of Friends of the Rockbridge Area Library and various other organizations.

She attended Mary Washington College and her career was mostly in writing. In recent years she was a food writer, writing a column for Blue Ridge Traditions for ten years.

Barbara also wrote some books titled Shenandoah Seasons and Shenandoah's Child.

Surviving are her four children, Kevin, Bret, Dod, and Sarah; nine grandchildren, Justin, Schuyler, Matthew, Myron, Amelia, MacKenzie, Samuel, Hilary, and Lane; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Joan D. Douglass and Brenda D. Raine; one brother, Daniel Dod.

A graveside service will be conducted at noon Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery with the Rev. Rhonda Wheeler officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Buena Vista, VA.
