Obituary for Christine Marie Verner Gaines Christine Marie Verner Gaines
Czech Republic Native Was Holocaust Survivor

Christine Marie Verner Gaines, 90, of 301 E. Fudge Street, Covington, Virginia, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at her daughter's residence.

She was born January 27, 1924 in Knezice, Czech Republic, a daughter of the late Frantisek and Bozena Bednar Verner.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ferald B. Gaines in 2001; her son, David Gaines in 1981, and also by one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Gaines was a Holocaust survivor and came to the United States with her first husband in 1948.

She had a real love for all children.

Surviving are her husband, Elroy Basham of Covington; her daughter, Donna Runyon and her husband, Walter "Lyn" of Covington; two step daughters, Bonnie Keyser and her husband, Michael and Kay Munsey, all of Covington; step grandchildren, James and Christy Hodges and Addie and Shawn Holesapple; Carolyn Runyon; David Runyon and Cory Runyon; children that were raised in the Gaines' home: Ellen Jaicks, Kirsten Jaicks, Ronnie Jaicks, Russell Jaicks, Joey Mineiro, Louie Mineiro, Paul Mineiro, and Michael Mineiro; a dear family friend, Dr. Luiz Mineiro; and her four grand dogs, Sam, Harley, Tucker and Tippi.

In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated.

The memorial service will be held Sunday October 12, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating.

Following the service the family will receive their friends.

The family suggests that memorial donations in Mrs. Gaines' name may be made to either Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or Alleghany County Humane Society, P. O. Box 60, Low Moor, VA 24457.
