Obituary for Doris Helen Knighton Smith Doris Helen Knighton Smith
Covington Native Was Former CHS Employee, Switchboard Operator

Doris Helen Knighton Smith, 90, of 208 Cliffview Drive, Covington, Virginia, died Monday May 25, 2015 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor.

She was born July 8, 1924 in Covington, a daughter of the late Guy Robert Knighton and Celia Bush Wolfe.

She was raised in the home of her grandparents, Ora and Ballard Bush and later Lillian Mae and Andrew Kinghton.

In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Lee Smith, Jr. in 1997, a daughter, Pamela Moore, and four brothers.

Mrs. Smith was a former employee of Covington High School, where she worked in the school office. She later was employed by the former Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company and then the former Clifton Forge-Waynesboro Telephone Company as a switch board operator.

She was a member of Mallow Presbyterian Church, where she was the former Treasurer of the Mallow Presbyterian Women, a member of the Church Circle and Church Historian.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Yancey and her husband, Ron of Covington, and Lydia Moore and her husband, Steve of Dowingtown, PA; one son, Patrick Smith and his wife, Debbie of Chicago, IL; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Friday May 29, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in the Mallow Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gary Marshall officiating.

The interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the Arritt Funeral Home.
